How do I use category-average data when I have no part number?
Search for and apply category-average data to a product line
If you do not have a manufacturer part number (MPN) for a product, you can still add it to your report using category-average data. Category-average data acts as an umbrella value covering all products in a given category, so you select the category that matches your product rather than an individual model.
To add a product using category-average data:
- Open your project and select the Solutions tab (step 2) at the top of the screen.
- In the Products panel, select the Product Search field. (The field is labelled "Use MPN for highest accuracy", which applies when you do have a part number.)
- Type category into the search field.
- From the list that appears, find the entry that matches your product's category, for example Category Average Notebook, Category Average Monitor or Category Average Smartphone. Each entry is shown with the brand Generic, an MPN and model of "Category Average [product type]", and a green CA badge.
- Select the matching entry to add it.
You will see a "Device has been added" confirmation, and a new line will appear in the Products list. The line shows the category name and icon, the brand Generic, the MPN and model "Category Average [product type]", and the green CA badge, confirming that category-average data has been applied. You can then set the Quantity, adjust the Lifetime (months) value, and use the Refurbished toggle as required.
Notes and exceptions
The category, rather than a specific model, is selected by choosing the "Category Average [product type]" entry that matches your product, such as a notebook, monitor or smartphone.
The CA badge on a line indicates category-average data. Where a product does have a part number, entering the MPN in the Product Search field gives the highest accuracy and may allow more precise methods to be applied instead.
